For music lovers and all-around amazing hosts, choosing the right DJ is a big part of planning a memorable wedding. To help you along, I had a heart-to-heart with Calgary’s own Pam and Glen from Musical Twist DJ, who offered insights on what every couple should know when looking for the perfect DJ. From walking down the aisle, to first dances, all the way to the wee hours of morning, Here’s your guide to finding a DJ who will turn your special day into an unforgettable celebration full of love, laughter, and the perfect soundtrack.

When to Book

“Book at least six months in advance,” Pam and Glen advise. Once your date and venue are set, securing your DJ is next. Booking early ensures availability and gives them time to plan a custom experience that suits your style.

Top Questions to Ask During Your Initial Meeting

  1. What experience do you have with weddings?

Experienced DJs like Glen and Pam bring reliability, flexibility, and an ability to keep the dance floor alive. Ask how long they’ve been in the business and find testimonials for an extra confidence boost.

  1. Will we have an initial consultation?

Meeting your DJ face-to-face, whether over Zoom or in person, is essential to make sure they understand your vision and vibe. Glen and Pam believe if they’re not the right fit, they’ll guide you to someone who is—because the right energy makes all the difference.

  1. How do you create the music playlist?

DJs often provide song suggestions, but you’ll want to be clear on preferred genres, must-haves, and a do-not-play list. Start by asking them if they will allow this, and next if they will provide you with guidance and what genres they are up for playing. Not all DJ’s will play every song, and many specialize in a certain genre – having the experience and data base to meet your needs. Glen and Pam have a vast library, so couples can craft a playlist that feels just right.

  1. Are you licensed and insured?

This often-overlooked question is key, especially as many venues require insurance. Ensuring your DJ is licensed and insured means one less worry on your big day.

  1. How involved will you be in guest interactions?

DJs play different roles: some are laid-back, others are interactive. Glen and Pam like to keep guests engaged, reading the crowd and adjusting as needed. Whether your wedding is all about mingling or dancing, ask how they’ll bring your vision to life.

  1. Can we preview the song choices?

DJs that offer planning sheets or playlists in advance, like Musical Twist DJ, make it easier to ensure everything sounds just right. Pre-approval options give couples peace of mind and let them make any final tweaks.

  1. Do you have a backup plan?

Life happens! Confirm that your DJ has backup equipment and a trusted network of DJs to call on if they’re unable to attend. Glen and Pam team up with others to ensure smooth coverage no matter what.

  1. Is your equipment right for your venue space?

Ask if their equipment can handle your Alberta venue’s size. Different spaces need specific sound systems, and experienced DJs should know what’s necessary.

  1. What’s covered in your contract?

A clear contract is essential to outline the scope of services, from setup and teardown times to specific music requests. Reviewing this carefully avoids surprises and keeps everyone on the same page.

  1. How involved will you be in planning?

I worked a wedding with Pam and Glen and was so impressed with the detailed itinerary they had laid out with the couple. I always do this with the couple a month before, but they were one step ahead of me. I knew every detail of what was going to happen (but they also were able to be flexible when things didn’t go according to plan). As wedding professionals we have a great idea of how long dinner will take, what should go before what, etc and can offer you this advice to make your life easier. Check with your DJ if they offer a plan like this or if they are more the hands off type.

11. What services do you offer?

A great DJ does more than just play music—they create an experience. Glen and Pam offer everything from DJ services to photo booths and custom gobos that add a personal touch to your celebration. Make sure to ask about their services in your initial meetings, and don’t shy away from those Zoom chats or face-to-face meetings. It’s all about finding that spark and feeling if they’re the right fit for you!

Finding the right DJ is about more than music; it’s about creating an atmosphere that captures the spirit of your day. Glen and Pam emphasize connection, flexibility, and a celebration style that’s personal to each couple. By asking the right questions and sharing your vision, you’ll secure a DJ who’ll bring joy, laughter, and the music of your life to every moment of your wedding day, so you can leave it all out on the dance floor.
